if you’re photographing people in the street without their prior knowledge or consent then often they won’t care you think they’re neat they'll tell you you're a pervert or a creep they’ll threaten sometimes too to break your neck you can tell them you're an artist so it's fine you can tell them you’re just documenting life they’ll look at you with fury in their eyes they’ll make you wish you’d learned to be discreet when photographing people in the street if back at home your still feel incomplete after all the tireless years that you have spent perfecting skills that might be obsolete when anybody out there can compete and you’re struggling uphill through wet cement you can tell yourself you’re documenting life and hopelessness is part of living too and watch your little movie on repeat and go back out tomorrow in the heat to photograph some people in the street

Heartburn 03:47
i get heartburn now and my voice has changed i speak softly now i don’t look the same i walk into a room i am in the room life is easy now life is very hard things seem far away things are in my yard i don’t have a yard do i need a yard? to sit on a fence it don’t weigh me down like it used to do who i was i mean hello how are you? look me in the eye i’m a friendly guy every seven years the cells in your body are all replaced there’s always space between atoms no one has ever touched my face i drink water now in a fizzy can out there in the yard things are making plans in my mind i mean i don't have a yard to sit on a fence to sit on

28 Degrees 03:12
it's 28 degrees here in october that's not normal people say wind blows wood smoke from the north in wood smoke turns all my thinking grey pelicans fishing on the water water surrounded by the land the land is crying for its daughter the daughter married the wrong man i'm in a short-term rental playing a borrowed guitar if there's more to life than description i can’t say what those things are in a coal mine with no canary self-important, sedentary oh dear what am i doing here? it's 28 degrees here in october people tell me that's bizarre the neighbourhood is very charming custom plates on every car that one actually just says kevin that minivan says second home burger king, 7-11 they say all roads lead to rome at night i imagine falling out of this sixth-floor room i don't plan to die in my hometown maybe this one would do it's not that i want to i just think i maybe ought to it's not clear what am i doing here?

tried to write it down tonight i called it hold me hold me hold me right now i almost feel alright i know that that's the old me the old me on his second beer sailing through the emptiness outside snow and there's a tree the tree looks kind of horny or maybe that's just me wishing somebody had told me that you have to pick a town and you've got to pick an emptiness we’re both too skinny in the mirror it’s cool we look like vampires you said i can’t just disappear you burned your jacket at the fire sparks were fireflies that night lighting up the emptiness i walk down to the water when i’m hanging by a thread you told me peace is knowing the peace is in your head wasps in the walls of our new place black ice on the highway angel with a blurry face grandpa singing my way it’s here for now it’s here for now balanced on the emptiness

you told me once i don't know how i feel about anything i said yeah i don't know how i feel about anything you came over once with a pocket full of vitamins they weren't vitamins at all you fell over in the doorway you looked so small you told me once i do one thing and then i do the next thing and if one thing's true it'll tell me about the next thing you had no furniture just one pot and a stack of novels we listened to songs all night and analyzed we never wrote a song where are you now? did you ever try that comedy? you were writing comedy are you working now? are you eating now? what are you reading? is it easy now? is it just the same as breathing? i still don't want to be anywhere at all another friend moved into that apartment your old apartment and when i go over to your old apartment it looks so small was it all a waste of time? did it mean anything at all? when i got back to town should i have given you a call?

the first scene is funny it warms up the crowd at least it's supposed to they're not very loud before intermission it gets pretty sad it isn't supposed to the writing's just bad if all the world's a stage they're turning off the lights producers are dismayed still fighting the good fight if all the world's a show nobody came to see the numbers don't add up actors don't work for free dee dee dee dee dee dee dee dee dee dee dee dee dee dee dee dee dee after the performance alone in the bar the kid from the paper runs into the star hey kid thanks for coming hey kid what'd you think? hey are you ok sir? can i buy you a drink? if all the world's a stage the sets don't look too good it all looks kind of cheap it's all just made of wood if all the world's a show nobody came to see the numbers don't add up actors don't work for free dee dee dee dee dee dee dee dee dee dee dee dee dee dee dee dee dee

Tiny Horses 04:30
and i ask if i should stay and you tell me that's ok i have done enough for now in another time and place morning light across your face always furrowing your brow easy come and easy go wipe away the falling snow pathologically discreet i don't believe in anything i feel nothing when i sing i am sitting at your feet and it's on the periphery and it's gone there's a shift in the energy and it's gone now we're in a little room and the medicine is blue and you show you understand in another time and place morning light across your face tiny horses in your hand easy come and easy go you won't say it but we know or at least we're pretty sure and i'm trying to pretend i believe we'll meet again and the rest of it's a blur and it's on the periphery and it's gone just a shift in the energy and it's gone
